Hutan Manao (portable version)

from Songs of the Dragon by Akar Umbi

/

about

"Hutan Manao" describes the travails of scouring the forest for cane (to be sold to furniture makers). While the menfolk are away for days, their women wait at home pining for them and praying for their safe return. When Minah Angong first sang this song to a live audience of 42,000 at Shah Alam Stadium on 16 Sept 1994, she became an overnight celebrity. Unfortunately Minah died two days before Akar Umbi was scheduled to begin work on a studio album in September 1999. The posthumously released album ('Songs of the Dragon') was culled from live recordings, draft takes and rehearsals.

Rafique Rashid had recorded an instrumental track on his 4-track over which Antares had laid down some evocative reed flute embellishments. Minah Angong visited the studio one afternoon and after some rice wine began singing a capella. Rafique recorded her cold voice and later we tried dropping it over the instrumental track. Voila... it worked! (The searing guitar solo by Simon Justin Leo was added years later.)

Guano Breath Malaysia

My output mostly dates back to the 1980s and has been heard by a mere handful. This isn't what I'm into now but at least I'm not too embarrassed about it.

Collaborations with others & freestyle choreographic works form an integral part of my archive.

I enjoy being the world's least ambitious musician.
